RMS patient FAQ
Are pooled referrals right for my patient?
While some patients want to wait to see a specific specialist, others want to get healthy as soon as possible. Pooling referrals offers patients the next available appointment with a qualified specialist within a specific group. This can reduce the patient's waiting time for treatment. It’s the patient’s choice. You, as their health care provider, are there to help with this decision.
If my patient selects the pooling option, how will I know if they are being referred to the right specialist?
Specialty groups that pool their referrals do so because they are confident in the skills and abilities of their colleagues. These specialists have decided to work as a team to efficiently provide their patients with high-quality care. They will ensure your patient sees the appropriate specialist for their treatment.
What role do I have in my patient's referral when pooled referrals are used?
Patients are encouraged to speak to their family health care provider about their referral options. Your involvement will ensure the patient's decision reflects their interests and includes your input and advice.
One of the benefits of pooled referrals for referring health care providers is that you don’t have to keep track of each specialist's sub-specialty interests, know about every new specialist in the community or determine whether a specialist has moved or retired. Pooled referrals ensure your referrals consistently reach the right specialist with the shortest wait time. It's a terrific resource for all family health care providers.
Can my patient request a specific specialist?
Yes, the intent of pooled referrals is to increase patient choice. Your patient can be referred to the specialist of their choice. Pooled referrals were developed to improve access to specialists and to make sure patients are seen by the appropriate specialist. When making a referral, you can recommend the next available specialist or the specialist they have seen in the past. It’s their choice.
If my patient is planning a vacation, will they get bumped to the bottom of the list?
No, your patient will be referred to the specialist with the next available opening. They can then schedule their procedure for their preferred date.
