About pooled referrals
Referral pooling helps patients see a specialist sooner. Instead of waiting for one specific provider, referrals can be directed to the next available qualified specialist. The Referral Management Service helps participating specialties receive, review and manage referrals more efficiently.
Benefits of referral pooling include:

- Gives patients the choice between connecting with the next available qualified specialist or a direct referral to a preferred specialist.
- Matches patients with the most appropriate specialist who can support their specific care needs.
- Gives one location to send the referral, reducing uncertainty for referring providers.
- Providers receive written confirmation that the referral has been reviewed and accepted.
- Standardizes referral requirements for each specialty group
- Enhances tracking to help specialties monitor wait times, improve processes and increase patient access.
How pooling referrals work
- The patient's health care provider refers them to a participating specialty.
- Available qualified specialists and their wait times are reviewed.
- Patients are directed to the next available qualified specialist.
For example:
Specialist A — 22 weeks
Specialist B — 12 weeks
Specialist C — 2 weeks
The patient is referred to Specialist C, reducing wait time and improving access to care.
If another specialist is a better match for your patient’s care, the referral can be reassigned within the participating specialty group. You’ll be notified of the change.
