Improving access to specialists continues to be a priority for Saskatchewan's health system. The Ministry of Health, in partnership with the Saskatchewan Medical Association and the Saskatchewan Health Authority are working to reduce specialist wait times and improve patient care. One initiative is the design of a more efficient and effective referral-consultation process.
The Provincial Referral Model, developed in 2013 by health system stakeholders, incorporates a number of tools and strategies shown to improve the quality of communication between care providers to support timely access to specialists and better patient care. The menu on the left lists all of the tools currently available that improve the referral-consultation process. They were designed and tested by physicians with a focus on ensuring they are simple and easy to use.
